A new jazz project from a guitarist with a long list of credits including South African legend Hugh Masekela, afrobeat co-creator Tony Allen and Ethiopian jazz originator Mulatu Astatke as well as a variety of Brit-jazz artists and setups.
Phil Dawson’s new project is focused on a dialogue with West African music - free-ranging compositions inspired by musical traditions from Ghana, Nigeria, Mali and Cameroon - reflecting Phil’s longstanding work with originators in these genres.
However, these swinging Afro grooves are blended with free improv, unorthodox instrumentation, extended harmony and rhythmic experiments also inspired by diverse sources, from Afro-Brazilian traditions to the work of Paul Motian. The band’s debut single has Nigerian percussionist Lekan Babalola (Cassandra Wilson band) as a special guest.
It features:
Phil Dawson - guitar;
Matheus Nova - bass;
Maurizio Ravalico - percussion;
Rowland Sutherland - flute;
Marius Rodrigues - drums.
